Secret 19 How to measure Success

Success is different for everyone, the important thing is to identify what Success means to you then to have a system where you can measure how close you are to achieving your definition of Success.

Measuring SuccessThis sounds like a simple task, so why do so many people struggle to achieve everything they want from life.
Walk in to many businesses right now and ask them if they are achieving everything they set out to achieve right now, you will probably find many businesses are saying they are just getting by and are struggling to achieve what they set out to achieve this year.
Before we can measure Success we need to define what it is, what does the word Success mean to you?
You are right the meaning does vary from one person to another, success in sport could mean you won or for another person it could mean they did better than last time.
So what about in business, for some it could be that they are still in business and for others they did better than last year.
So before you can measure your Success you need to define what Success means to you and your business.
It really is hard to measure something if you do not have a clear definition of what it is, it is a bit like saying, how long is a piece of string. If you know its length then the answer is very easy, on the other hand you do not know where it starts or where it ends the challenge is much harder.
The SECRET.
Before you can measure Success you need to define what Success means to you.
Step one is to define your definition of success.
Step two now you know what being successful is for you, it is possible to measure your performance against the task to see how successful you have been.
Hopefully you can start to see that this needs to be worked at, you cannot just say I have been successful this year or more successful than last year unless you have clearly defined terms for Success.
Let’s say you were looking at income over a twelve month period.
You could start by saying you want say $100,000 income by the end of 12 months. Now you have a clearly defined statement you can measure against. This means every month you can compare your income against the target and see what you need to do to achieve your goal.
First you could say I need to generate $8333 every month to achieve the target which is your measure of success. If you fall short in month one then you can recalculate what you want in month two and so on.
This same technique works for most things, let say you play a sport and set your self a level of success at the end of a given period, you can monitor your performance month after month to ensure you meet your annual target.
If you fail to measure your success you will often find you fail to achieve the goal you set yourself at the beginning.
Why do I say this, well because it is often true for one, secondly if you fail to measure your performance against your goal you are unable to modify your approach or put in more effort to achieve it as you have no idea how well you are doing.
Measuring your progress is essential to achieving your goals.

Here is another secret, always set your target much higher than you are prepared to achieve, the brain has a unique ability to tell you that you will get there even though it knows you are going to fall short.
If your actual target is lower than the target you set, you are much more likely to achieve your target.

Why is it so many people do something once and when it doesn't work they just drop it and look for another way. If the inventors used this principle then we would never be as advanced as we are today. Things do not always work on the first attempt, at the same time unless you use this secret you will never ever know how close you are to succeeding.

test test and retestThis is the final secret in this series and before I talk about it let me just say, I hope you have found each of the secrets up to now useful in helping you achieve Success in what ever it is you are trying to do.
As with all the other content in this book I am sure you will realise it really does not matter what business you are in or how big your business is today, some of these secrets will have made you think, caused you to take action in some part of your business or just get started in business with a much better understanding of what business is about.
This final secret is as important as the rest, the title says test, test and retest. So what do I mean by test.
So many people start a business, set it up in a particular way and hope they have set up everything right. They then just wait and see if they have it right.
Of course based on the fact that some 80% on new businesses fail within a very short while the probability is most of them don’t get it right.
Ask Richard Branson the guy who runs Virgin if this is true. Richard will tell you that 8 out of every 10 businesses he starts fail, yes that is right the same 80% of businesses a very successful wealthy entrepreneur starts fail.
So now I have your attention I am ready to share the final secret with you.
The SECRET.
Where would you like your business to be, one of the 20% or one of the 80%, of course I know the answer, for some of you the 80% is some where you have been before and you may now be I the 20% or this time round you are determined to be in the 20%.
You are already likely to be in the 20% if you take on board what I have been sharing with you.
Today as I say I want to share one more very important secret with you.
Coming from the back ground of engineering makes this an obvious activity for me, for many it is just the opposite, most people work on the basis that setting things up and waiting for an end result is the way of life.
As an engineer I have been taught never to really on the first thing you do. Always set up a test and see if you get the right result.
If not then set up another test and see if this improves the situation or not.
If things get better then try and improve the situation still further and see if you get a better result.
Yes as the title says test, test and retest until you achieve the best result you can.
There is another secret, it is obvious to me, but may not be to you.
Keep a good record of what you are doing and note what works and what doesn’t. Never throw the first test away until you have a much better one.
Secret three is this, do small test first and then when they work start to increase the size of the test and keep monitoring the results, when they start to decline you have probably reached your limit.
Let me give you a couple of examples of testing:
1.    Email marketing – Never buy a list of emails and just mail to all of them, always buy a sample first and see if you get results with them. Ask the supplier for every tenth or hundredth email and see if they convert. Try more than one email just incase the first one does not convert.
2.    Direct Mail – so many people buy a list of names and then spend huge amounts of money creating a direct mail piece. They then spend a huge sum on sending them out only to find the response is not as good as they had hoped.
Are you starting to get the message, do small tests first, ensure your mailing converts into sales at the rate you want, see if you can improve the situation with a slightly modified mailing and only when you see the return you can afford (profit) should you invest a larger sum.
So the final secret is test, test and retest, only then having achieved the right result should you dive in at the deep end and invest serious money. “Money Is Nothing But The Measure Of The Value You Create For Other People”

List building is an art, let us explore why it is an art everyone in business needs to learn. Today I want to explain the power of a list over virtually all other forms of marketing.

In the financial markets businesses are valued based on the size of their list and customer base.
Recently while working with a company in Florida their urgent need was to build a huge list of customers and possible customers to increase their overall value prior to launching on the stock market.
They said every potential investor asked this question “How big is your list?”
A list gives you the following real benefits:
Your own personal list.The opportunity to build a relationship with your list.The ability to communicate often.A way to avoid direct competition.Added value to your business. 
Let me take each point and explain more.
Your own personal list.
Quite simply having collected your list it is yours to communicate with for as long as the people decide to stay on it. Treat them well and they will stay with you for a long time and will buy from you.
The opportunity to build a relationship with your list.
Having a list is one thing, building a strong relationship with them is the key. The stronger the bond between you and your list the more likely they are to stay with you and buy your products and services
The ability to communicate often.
Businesses without lists of buyers and potential buyers search for new people interested in their products and services. When you build a list you can keep them updated about your products and when you plan to launch new ones or offer special deals. There is no need to chase new prospects, just keep your list warm and informed and you will get more sales.
A way to avoid direct competition.
This is a serious benefit to your own list. Just imagine if you only advertised your product on or offline. You are always having to compete with your competitors. If you have your own list, it is yours and no one else can access it directly so you will never have to directly compete for attention. The stronger the relationship you have with your list the better chance you have of them buying from you.
Apart from paying your auto responder company to store your list, you can send emails to your list as often as you like at no extra cost.
Added value to your business.
People build businesses for different reasons, some see them as a long term income generator, others see them as an opportunity to generate a cash sum for their retirement once the business has grown to a certain size.
What ever your motive, having a really good list can be a major asset. Just imagine selling a business which has a list of customers which buy let’s say $100 a month from you. With a list of 1,000 over time , can you see your business is instantly valued at 100 x 1,000 = $100,000 per month that’s $1.2 million/year.

Everyone needs to read this, it is the foundation of Success shared by the person who I have significant respect for. His name is Mark Anastasi, author of The Laptop Millionaire.

Facebook edge rankFacebook, now a billion users strong, is a key marketing channels for many businesses. But beyond the fans, likes and posts, how does it actually work? How and why do your posts appear in your customer’s news feeds? And how can you make sure they do?

There are several misconceptions regarding social media, but one of the biggest I hear on a regular basis is people saying “Whatever I post on my Facebook page will be seen by all my fans”, or, “My page has lots of fans but why don’t my posts get many views or likes?” The reason for this: EdgeRank.
EdgeRank is Facebook’s algorithm that determines what content users are shown in their news feeds and also how high this is displayed. It’s something that’s at the heart of Facebook and affects not only what users’ see of their friends’ updates, but also the posts made by a page. This element is what we’re interested in as digital marketers, and as such, forms the basis of this article.

To help understand the notion of EdgeRank it’s important to first look at ‘Edges’ – these are basically the things that happen on Facebook, including but not exclusively, status updates, comments, shares and likes.

Being an algorithm, there has to be some sort of equation involved, so here it is:

Rank = Affinity x Weight x Decay

Each Edge is made up of the sum three key factors that form it. These are Affinity, Weight and Decay. The higher each of these factors is, the higher the EdgeRank and the more people will see your content.
Looking at each factor in detail they are defined as:

Affinity– this is a measure of how ‘close’ the viewing user is to the Edge creator. If a user makes a number of interactions (likes, comments etc) with the Edges of a particular page then their affinity will be greater. This does seem to resonate in my own news feed, in that I tend to be seeing updates from pages that I have recently interacted with. Since I first created a Facebook account on 10 May 2007, I have apparently liked 197 pages, yet I know for sure I only ever see updates from a handful that I generally interact with and have interacted with recently.

Weight– each type of Edge (eg, photo, status update, question) is given a weighting. Publishing content of a heavier weight may increase the EdgeRank, which we’ll explore further below.
As well as content types, user actions can also carry weight – the general suggestion is that a comment has more weight than a like, as the action is more involved, it requires more effort. Another consideration related to this is ‘accumulation’. When a post gains a number of comments or likes, this can give it more weight, creating a positive cycle.

Decay– the factor based on how long ago the edge was created. Broadly speaking, the older the Edge the less value it has, therefore the less impact it has on EdgeRank. Facebook’s news feeds work in a way that can very quickly push down content, especially during peak times of posting, like in the evening.

EdgeRank works by analyzing all of the Edges that the user is connected to before ranking each of the Edges according to the importance of these to the user. As a rule of thumb, the item with the highest EdgeRank will be placed at the top of the feed, although this is not always the case as Facebook seems to display some randomly as well, just to make things even harder to predict.

This ‘randomness’ is something that needs to be carefully considered when looking at EdgeRank. Sometimes Facebook does throw a ‘curve-ball’, by displaying some content that you don’t expect to see in your news feed.

As mentioned above, when defining the factor of weight, there seems to be a general consensus from many within the industry that it’s the type of post content that can have the biggest effect on EdgeRank.
I therefore took a look at some of the pages that I personally manage, to see whether there was any correlation with this at all. Taking two clients, I extracted their post content data from Facebook Insights for the period 1 March 2012 – 30 August 2012 and, using averages, looked at the following metrics:
Lifetime Post Total Reach – the number of people who saw your page post (unique users).Lifetime Post Organic Reach – the number of people who saw your page post in the news feed or ticker, or on your page's wall (unique users).Lifetime Post Viral Reach – the number of people who saw your page post in a story from a friend (unique users).Lifetime Post Total Impressions – the number of impressions of your page post (total count).Lifetime Post Organic Impressions – the number of impressions of your post in the news feed or ticker or on your page's Wall (total count).
Client ‘A’has a page with around 800 likes and here’s a graph of all the above metrics:

This graph very clearly shows that photos provided the most reach and impressions across all of the metrics during this time. Looking at Lifetime Post Total Impressions, we can see that photographs got nearly double the amount when compared with other types of post. Therefore, we could surmise in this case that photos are twice as likely to be seen as other types of posts.

All of the other post types are fairly evenly spread, but the graph also shows that video performs well.

Client ‘B’has a page with around 10,500 likes and the following interaction data:

Again, looking at the graph we can see that photos are leading the way in terms of response gained. In this instance, the difference isn’t quite as marked, yet it is still a definitive result. This client has also used questions, which many people believe are given a higher weight than straight status updates. However, in this instance that belief is not necessarily reflected in their reach.

There are obviously some factors that come in to play that could have affected these results, such as time of day or day of week when this content was posted.

The actual post content could also have a potential effect on its reach. If a photo is particularly funny or shocking then it may naturally be shared more, receive more likes and comments and, as a result, have a greater reach.

However, as a snapshot, this analysis is still an indicator of the potential impact that different types of content have, with content items of more weight (ie, photos) performing better than those with less weight.

As we know already, EdgeRank is an algorithm, and like any good algorithm (for example, Google’s) we only know some of the factors that contribute to and influence it. This makes it far from easy to predict, so we can only really make suggestions that could help with the ‘potential’ EdgeRank.

Here are a few tips that may help you take advantage of this potential:

Post regularly.This is linked to the decay factor. By posting more regularly, your page is kept fresh. Plus, regular posting can help keep people engaged and they may even get into a habit of checking back to your page, rather than waiting to see something in their news feeds. A factor linked to this is ‘Accumulation of Posting’. This is something that a number of my colleagues have noted with their page management: if you post more regularly then you may see this have a residual effect on the overall impressions and reach levels of subsequent posts (see image below).

This is a look at one of our client’s reach in Facebook Insights. The purple spots on the x axis represent every time they post something. And the number of people who see that post (Reach) is in blue.

You can see that the more they post, the greater their reach and the more they’re talked about.

Post different types of content.This is linked to weight and backs up some of the findings above. A cocktail of post-types is a good way to keep fans engaged. One recommendation is to create a social media schedule, which details what you are going to post on which day.

Post at different times.There is a chance that the time of day, or the day of week when you post could have an effect on EdgeRank, so experiment with it.

Make the most of recent increases in fans.Often people will carry out some activity that gains them a substantial increase in page likes, but then they fail to follow it up with any posting. As a result, the potential EdgeRank disappears very quickly.

Measure your posts.Facebook has provided some pretty good analytics tools in the form of Facebook Insights that can help you see exactly which posts and type of posts perform better (in terms of impressions, reach and more). By checking this data regularly, you can tweak your posting and then measure again if this has an effect.

One spanner to throw into the whole mix is that Facebook gives users the ability to control what they see in their news feeds. By adjusting their settings, they can view Top Stories as opposed to Most Recent, hide a particular type of story or even hide updates from a page - the worst possible scenario for a page owner.

However, in most cases, users tend to leave their news feeds as they are, especially if they have lots of friends, page likes etc, as their feeds are continually refreshing. Why should they care about EdgeRank?

So why is EdgeRank important to us as page owners and marketers? Well, if any of you have to fight to justify time, resources and budget spent on Facebook activity then it’s really important! Keeping an eye on what you post and what results these posts bring will help to ensure that your page gets the best possible chance of having success.

One final note is that it’s worth heeding what Facebook itself offers as advice: “Posting regularly with engaging content gets more people to talk about your business with their friends. As a result, you end up reaching more people overall.”

Business success comes from thinking through the process well, most people either buy or develop some form of product or service and then try and sell it to others often without success, today I want to share each of the major steps with you.

Business SuccessThere are a number of different activities required to run a successful business, to achieve Success in your business you need to achieve each of the following:
A clear understanding of what you are offering, this needs to be a full product specification including costs, time required, materials required, profit margin required.

How much you need to earn to cover all your costs both from a business and personal point of view. In what timeframe and what is your plan for growth.

How many hours per week are available and how many of them will be allocated to Preparation, development of each venture you are involved in.

How many clients you need each month subscribing to which products to achieve the requirements defined above.

How will clients be able to sign up to your program/product?

Does your marketing material spell out what is on offer,       

- A clear definition of what they will receive for their investment,

- What your program is worth to them,

- What the likely outcome of investing in your program will be,

- How much it will cost,

- What will happen when they sign up and what they will walk away with at the end of the program?

A complete marketing plan which includes who your target market is, where you can find them, what message will you be using to attract them to your sales page and what marketing methods you are and will be using to attract them.

A Brand strategy which ensures you/your business is found where ever people look e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Your own Blog, LinkedIn, Pinterest. The aim is to be recognised as the expert in your field. 

You may already have some or all of this information today, if not then you need to identify what you already have and what is missing and plan your available time to ensure each of these items is available as quickly as possible.

Keywords are the words, or combinations of words, that cause your website to show up on search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing). They are among the most important things for you to understand if you want to increase traffic on your website.

How do I use keywords to my advantage?

The best way to use keywords to your advantage is to know the words and phrases people are likely to use when searching for the content your website provides. Once you have identified the words and phrases people are likely to use, do your best to incorporate these words and phrases into the content on your site. Make sure the words and phrases are included in the content in a fluid manner, however, as search engines can mark your site as "spam" if they feel you are using keywords that are irrelevant to your content, simply to drive up your traffic.

Can I designate specific words or phrases as keywords?

Most websites allow you to use meta tags to designate certain words as your "keywords." However, this is inadvisable, as search engines no longer use meta tags in their compilation of search results, and in fact, this may even increase the likelihood of a search engine labeling your site as "spam."

I've heard search engines don't use keywords anymore; is this true?

In the 1990s, search engines relied heavily on meta tags in order to distinguish keywords, and thus, to determine site rankings in search results. However, this led to "spam" sites tagging relevant keywords en masse, but providing no content on the site to go along with the keywords. Since then, search engines have changed their approach, and in 2009, Yahoo - who had been the last search engine still giving serious weight to meta tags - switched away from meta tags altogether, meaning that meta tags are no longer a valuable way to increase visibility through search engines. However, this does not mean that keywords in general are not used by search engines - and while search engines do not make their processes public, studies have shown that using keywords effectively, in the content of a website, greatly increases the chances of the website showing up in searches!

Where should I put my keywords?

Using keywords in the title of posts on your website, and in the description of your website, will help quite a bit in giving your website search engine visibility. But in the long run, the best thing you can do is know the keywords you feel will be beneficial, and incorporate these keywords into the content you add to your site!

How do I know which keywords to use?

It can be difficult at times to know which keywords will most effectively bring readers your way, but one of the best things you can do is conduct searches for the content you are planning to write. As you use different keyword combinations, you will be able to figure out the words and word combinations people are most likely to use, and will also be able to get a feel for where your content will show up in a search as you use certain words and phrases.

What else can I do with keywords to increase my search engine visibility?

Studies have concluded that one of the best ways to increase your ranking in search engine searches is for others to link to your site - and the best way to make this happen is to provide valuable content! As you provide valuable content, others will link to you using the same keyword combinations you use in the content itself, and this will help you to keep climbing higher in those ever-important search engine rankings!

You may find that using webfire's keyword tools can help you quickly research to determine your ideal keywords. There are a wide range of keyword tools in the keyword section, and they range from broad to specific in nature.

Now the important thing is this, the visitors who come to your site have a similar passion to you and want to learn much more about their chosen subject. When they arrive on your site they realise you have a considerable amount of knowledge on the subject.
This is exactly what we are looking for, some of these visitors would definitely be prepared to pay a membership fee to become a member of your site in return for more and more quality information.
So how many people do you need to join your membership site for you to make a good amount of money.
The first question is this, what is a good amount of money to you?
Is it say an extra $1,000 per month?
Perhaps $2,000 per month.
How about $5,000 a month.
Or even $10,000 a month.
Let us say you charge a monthly membership fee of $47, now I think you would agree if you create a site with lots of really good valuable content on it $47 a month for most people is not a lot of money, you could if you wanted offer them a special price for the first month so they can verify the quality of what is on offer before they join.
Let us take a look at how many people you need to find to achieve the numbers stated above.

Is this a surprise, it was to me the first time I worked it out, don’t forget, we are not looking for 22 people a month we are just looking for 22 to make $1,000 per month.

So many great plans and ideas end up withering away because of self-doubt, lack of attention, or just plain old procrastination.

If that sounds like you, then you need to introduce some active inertia into your life.

Active inertia is what happens when your commitment to a project or an idea becomes so heavy that it just keeps moving of its own accord.

It starts to drive itself - and you along with it.

How do you get this active inertia?

Little by little you bring the project to life. First you make it real - and putting it in writing is the only way that you can effectively do that.

Then you make it urgent - impose real deadlines on yourself.

Thirdly you make it important. If you can find ways to make your plans vital to your life, they will, in turn, vitalise your life.

Finally, build in momentum. A line of dominoes is virtually impossible to stop once it has started toppling, but every domino has been put in place long before the first one was knocked over. Think a step or two, or three ahead of yourself and each task completed will automatically bounce you along to the next one.

Get those four steps involved with your projects and you won't find yourself hanging back at the starting gate any more. Active inertia will drive you forward to the finishing line every single time.

become richWhen I read this post I had to add it to my Blog because I know it is true. I meet so many people with potential, but as you will read having potential is not enough. As an engineer I know that a battery has potential (the power within the battery) but unless you take action and connect the battery to the device you want to drive, nothing will happen.

Read this carefully and then use your potential to create wealth for you and your family.

Earl Nightingale quoted William James (often called the father of American psychology) on the subject of becoming rich.

James said (according to Nightingale), "If you would be learned, you will be learned ... if you would be rich, you will be rich ... but work for whatever it is you want exclusively and don't at the same time wish for a thousand other things. We become what we make up our minds to become. It is nobody's fault that the greatmajority of the people never make up their minds to become anything at all."

Isn't that so true?

We live in an age in which we are bombarded with new ideas, new dreams and new opportunities every minute of the day. You can't exist for a moment without someone telling what you have the potential to become.

Yet few of us ever do become. We never realize that potential.

My dictionary defines potential as:

Capable of coming into being or action.
Latent.
Expressing possibility.

All well and good, but aren't those definitions all rather future-tense?

I have my own definition that I prefer:

Potential is what you have before you start taking the actions to get it.

That's right ... nothing.

But once you start to take those actions - boy!

Electricity in a cable is just a potential. As soon as you take an action and flick the switch, the whole room is filled with light.

So it is with your life. Fill it with the power of focused action and you'll see into the darkest corner.
